Should turbos be rebuild around this time?

Whats the expected life of a turbo before you should consider getting a new 1?

turbos need to be rebuilt when you start seeing a shite load of white smoke coming out of your exhaust when your boosting

it'll be a massive cloud of smoke and will then ease away when you come off boost.

turbos can last 200 000kms...if you never boost your car..or they can die in 5000kms if you are constantly on the boost or if you run short of oil or if you boost it above its reccommended level ie: boosting a stock t25g on 18psi as a daily driver will last you two weeks max before the turbo shits itself.

so...in short, you will find that most turbos are coming towards the end of thier life at around 100 000kms but no means does that mean that all of them are useless after this amount of kays.

when purchasing a second hand turbo or a second hand turbo charged car look for one under 100 000kms....if the turbo is still on the motor, pull off the intake piping coming from the air filter and check for shaft play...a good turbo will have NONE - extremly minimal shaft play

Actually ill disagree with that Omar, I think most turbos last well over 100000km's, but you put your point across, you boot it all the time she blows, your calm (like I believe most drivers are), they last quite a long time, ours had to be replaced at like 200000km's and dad wasn't exactly easy on it. It depends on quality as well, a well built turbo will last a lot longer than a shit one. Look at all the Falcons coming out, I guarantee you most of those turbos will last for about 200000km's, if you boot it every now and then you wont have any trouble, its only people like us who thrash them all of the time that have issues....lol

it really depends on the type of turbo, not the size.. i mean wether it is ceramic or metal, will make a huge diffrence as well, so many factors come into play with turbo's, there is never a set kilometer level, it really depends on the driver of the car, and the way it has been treated since new, especially in the first 1000kms of driving when your "breaking it in"

tru to both...nissan use ceramic turbos that tend to wear a lot quicker

fords such as the telstar tx5 turbos were steel...last a shit load longer

when pellas turbo was out of the car i had a look at it..after 100 000kms of belting the fucker around..it had not one slight bit of shaft play...it was like brand new

so..i agree...diff build qualities make for a different life span

a turbo shaft is the centre rod inside the turbo housing between the intake rotor and exhaust rotor

a ball bearing turbo should have NO shaft play watsoever

a bush bearing turbo is allowed to have 2-4mm of shaft play when in healthy condition

if a turbo has excessive shaft play, the rotors hits the insides of the housing and can chip away potentially causing fatal engine damage as the chips are sucked into your intake

most often when a turbo has shaft play, you will notcie less boost, and you will also hear a loud grinding noise coming from the turbo

but the key indicator that your turbo is in need of replacing is thick white smoke on start up and when you are putting your foot into it...smoke that leaves a trail 50 meters after your car when boosting it
